"Why study Biology NOW? Why not?"- Dr. Nuria Conde

A super interesting week exploring some basics of biology at the freedom with which we can experiment to explore the limits of designing at        a micro scale.

Cultivating Bacteria

We learned to cultivate some bacteria with easily accessible materials. We I enjoyed learning the recipes and the lab rules. Especially the sterile space and the artefact designed to approximate the space. After our best efforts, the incubator failed overnight by not being hot enough.

We put the samples by the heater in class and ended up being able to see the colonies of bacteria. It was awesome.

Looking small

We collected the bacteria we cultivated and saw it under the microscope to observe the details of the eukaryotes. We also saw samples of various different types of cells in the human body. The results were very vibrant and motivated me to try and identify the types and parts inside the visualisations. This was a fun exercise to do and motivated me to get a small portable microscope so I can observe other things I find under the lens.

Spirulina

Nuria got us some spirulina which is considered a multi-nutritious superfood. Some people did not like the taste and texture. I thought it was just plain and could do with some flavour. After we literally got a taste for spirulina, we propagated a sample that we decided to monitor and grow everyday in class. Update: the spirulina died :( we tried but could not give enough attention during the winter break.

GMO Proposal

Here is the initial proposal to create a GMO that digests human hair. My design space at the moment does not include organic beings so I picked this topic as this is a deep and personal problem that I face.

Reflection

It was an incredibly interesting seminar. Biology has always been my favourite subject. I love to learn and explore about biotechnology and bioinformatics. It is not the centre of my design space but I immersed myself into the experience. It was familiar and interesting to work with a scientific method after weeks of abstract exploration.

I was excited for this week and i took detailed and intensive notes and took many learnings from the course even though the contents does not directly fall into my design space. I still take the values, considerations and analytical outlook into my future projects. I will keep updated on biological even more with the resources given by IAAC.

The concept of hacking experiments to further the exploration instead of restarting the experiment until we got the right environments is something that really helped me break some pre instilled values of perfectionism over action.
