Extended Intelligences
Reflection: The concept of extended intelligence arises from the increase in collaboration between humans and technology. Until the lectures, AI seemed like a daunting and complicated tool that was there to take jobs from designers.
I had always imagined that when technology replaced humans, it would be the tough jobs. Construction, mining, war, sanitation, driving, etc. I still believe as interesting as it is, it’s a shame that artists, writers and poets are the ones being replaced. Of course, the goal is to use it as a tool and engage with it rather than be in denial about the course that technological evolution is taking.
This seminar helped to remove some negative feelings I had about Extended Intelligence. Now I find it rather fascinating how humans are putting every dollar and hope into artificially creating something most similar what the best version of a human can be. It is cute. The class helped breakdown concepts like datasets and neural networks while also providing resources to find them and tools to use them. I can now see how impressive it is without feeling daunted by it.
I enjoyed working on the project below that was about highlighting bias in texts. I liked the nuances that we identified in conversation about how the diversity in datasets and the emotional entities that creates bias can even make it more complicated to have larger datasets. I learned about the scope of using the tools that are available to us such as colab and enjoyed learning about how to teach a machine.
I would like to appreciate the teachers for being patient and helpful and answering all my questions till I understood them.
